New Front Panel

Post by nuhobby »

I've had to fabricate a new front panel since that was also missing. I got some proportions from pictures of similar chests on the web. The center piece of Oak is the same "lucky find" oak from Ace Hardware that I used on the last chest.....

Post by nuhobby »

I appreciate the encouragement!

Now in the final stretches, taking a lot of time to glue all the felt facets:

You've got me thinking about a chest myself.

It's a shame the maple is hidden. What a beautiful wood/pattern! It's amazing what people can do when a plan comes completely together. Nothing beats taking something which someone is ready to throw away and turn it into something worth showing at a state fair.

Great job!

Some comments:

Holsgo -- Actually you're the one that got me thinking about this restoration/modification stuff :) :

Possibly pertinent update: Just yesterday I noticed that my hardware supplier http://www.machinistchest.com is oddly showing "no stock" on every item. Also his individual stuff is no longer showing on eBay. Hoping it's temporary but it seemed disturbing. A lot of the hardware items can also be found on http://www.gerstnerusa.com (costing more), but not items like the Union ring-pulls I used on chest #1.

Backhertz -- Thanks! I suspect the recipient (my nephew) will keep that front panel stowed underneath so the drawers will show. Coincidence on the maple drawers -- I didn't know Gerstner made this option, but just yesterday I found this special-edition:

As I look back I see you were the one cheering me on. I appreciate that. I got so few people playing along in that thread that at times I almost thought I was talking to myself. It seems you have had some great success with these chests that now I'm inspired to try another project.
