Have not got to that area yet. Once I get the housing gasket to seal, I may find that the expansion plug leaks too. I will update once I get the cover gasket sealed so it does not leak. I will see if I can find a replacement for the expansion plug too.

My first thought would be to use red LocTite (permanent) around the expansion plug to seal it. I normally take the type of expansion plug used in the jig saw and place it in socket with the bow down. Then I take a ball peen hammer and increase the bow so when I install the expansion plug I can tap it back flat and seal it.

Bill--I received #74 oil seal. It fits on the shaft between the housing and the outer bearing but there isn't enough room to reinstall the retaining clip.

I though this was the right part?

Eureka!!! I finally got the oil seal to fit and reassembled the jigsaw with your expert advice. No leaks and works like a charm!!!

My 'new' jigsaw (1984) is now purring and not leaking out of the front bearing seal due to the new replacement. It is -however- seeping from the gasket and on the very bottom of the vertical shaft cylinder. It's so slight that I could live with it for a few years. Just curious...does anyone know if you can replace the cap at the bottom of the vertical shaft cylinder? not sure why it's leaking a little.

The cap at the bottom of the vertical shaft cylinder is an aluminum concave (dome) 29/32" expansion plug. It is a metal to metal fit and appears no sealer was used. I have been unable to find a retail source for this size aluminum concave (dome) expansion plug. I have sent Emails to several manufacturies asking for for the names of their distributors/dealers.

I have been removing them with a long punch down the vertical shaft hole. I have been redoming the plug by setting it on a 3/4" socket with the outside/bottom down and placing the round part of a small ball peen in the center of the plug, I use a larger hammer to make the plug more concave/domed. Then I use red LocTite (permanent) around the edge of the opening and with the dome being out, I flatten the dome until the plug is firmly seated in the housing. This has worked for the couple jig saws that I did so far. I have not tried putting LocTite down inside the bottom of the vertical shaft cylinder to see if it would seal any leaks but it may work.

I still have not made any housing gaskets from the different gasket materials I brought. I brought another jig saw (6 now leaking) that the housing gasket seeps oil so it must be the original gasket material that over time/aging allows the oil to seep. Be sure the vent hole is open as it can get filled with crud or paint if the housing is repainted. I use air compressor oil for the jig saw.

I will keep trying different gasket materials until I find one that does not leak. I will post my gasket making results when successful.

Great, thanks. As i know nothing about oil, can't ever recall what to get for the car, you've saved my one of those long sessions of starting at different labels trying to figure out what is important to compare.

I've got to pick up some parts to make a hoist to swap around SPTs this weekend anyhow. I've got a lot of shop projects all coming together at the same time feels good to get them off the list and will make working in the shop much easier.

Oh, I should clarify: I could only find the parts on their website when I searched for ONLY the number starting with 3. If I cut and pasted both numbers in the field it found nothing and looked like they no longer carry them.
