One thing to note about the fiber wad and setscrew to hold the adapter in the chuck itself, this is needed when using a machine that can turn in both directions like the Power Pro or the old Mark VII. If you have a Mark V, the rotation of the spindle will keep the adapter in the chuck provided you have it installed properly. But if you have the Power Pro and run the spindle in reverse, the adapter could unwind from the chuck body unless you secure the adapter with the wad and setscrew.

All, I am wondering if I misunderstood kbuzz's post. I got the idea he was using the fiber washer under the ISNS set screw. If that was an incorrect assumption, gomenasai. <Japanese for excuseeeee me> As I reread it, I am sure I misunderstood.

I was "A OKAY" until I read this. I have the wad under the grub screw that tightens down on the threads of the adapter.

I figured the wad was intended to prevent damage to those threads.

I also figured that the grub screw was intended to prevent the adapter from screwing out of the chuck when operating in reverse or coming to a quick stop.

Yup, this thread may never die.

I believe you are absolutely correct. I did some homework & noted the fibre washer is under the 3mm set screw that rests on the threads of the adapter. I'm going to stop looking at the G3 posts. I made a New Years resolution to not open them, but I couldn't resist.

Thank goodness this is a civil forum or my house would be on fire from being flamed…

AIUI the fibre washer goes under the set screw that secures the adapter to the the chuck. The set screw is in the chuck. The fiber washer allows tightening the set screw without scarring the adapter threads. The fibre washer is between the inside end of the setscrew and the adapter threads.

It is not the angled set screw that secures the adapter to the ss shaft.

I think the set screw is needed regardless of whether the chuck goes 'forwards' or 'backwards', but more so if 'backwards'.

Just to clarify, the set screw that I was talking about is the one that secures the chuck to the SS adapter (not the set screw that mounts the adapter to the quill).

The set screw is next to the chuck key end pin hole (visible when looking down into one of the Nova chuck key access holes).

And, yes, I'm sure the set screw was well torqued and the fibre wad was completely seated.

This set screw was setting a bit proud of the chuck body and was interfering with the nova chuck key.

Not a big deal, two minutes with a file and set screw no longer a problem

Another email special for the G3 which I may finally buy into. Reading threads from the past few years sounds like there have been adapter screw-ups. I assume all has been worked out and ordering (from Shopsmith) all correct hardware arrives?

FYI, I did a rough comparison from Shopsmith's email special prices, to the lowest I could find on Amazon (including the ISNS adapter) and the total prices for both sites for all items together, G3-25mm-35mm-45mm-miniCole,(factoring in taxes, (free)shipping, etc), Shopsmith was actually about $10 cheaper. Not bad.
