If the joint-matic was in production today under the Stong Tool Design ?

The old original Strong Tool Design was better than when it sold to Delta.

I think a quick search here will find a few threads I have done that deal with the joint-matic. This one might be a good starter:

https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=2737

There is a short review here:

http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/300

(BTW 2 of the 3 pictures are mine)

I might have done some postings at ssug.org, could have even done a history?? (When they revised the forum some stuff got lost.)

I know only person with the Strong version and while he is a member he doesn't post much and I will not be naming him.

Ah Ha, a year ago my brother bought a greenie that had been badly neglected. Now I understand where the rather interesting table set up on it came from. He has tried to make use of it but never able to master it. I confess to looking at it and feeling that between my 520 set up, the OPR and a rather nice Incra router set up. I have no desire for one. I do appreciate the links and education. It's nice to know what it is. I may suggest brother try and sell it. Jim

I had answered the other post which had been tacked onto an old thread. So I figured I might as well add my two cent to this thread, which hadn't been opened yet when I stared my reply.

I have a Joint-matic. I picked it up right before winter at a great deal. I was able to do a few box joints with it as practice, but probably wasn't using the right kind of stock. The router tended to blow out the plywood I was using. Probably need to use solid stock for better results.

That is about it for my using it so far. I've only managed not to be sick for three weeks since Thanksgiving and most of those three weeks have fallen during the coldest weather we've had so far. I have the Flu right now :( I guessing I'm going to be staying out of the workshop this entire winter.

Mine came with a 1 1/2 hp porter cable router - 690 model I believe and once you take it off the huge stand, it isn't to hard to store. The stand causes the unit to have a huge footprint. One could easily drill a couple of screws into a workbench and be fine.

Also, I mentioned it in the other thread , it appears hat MLCS, or whatever that router bit company name is has been selling knock offs with laminated plywood and plexiglass for a while. I see it advertised in one of my woodworkers magazines quite regularly. At the price they are selling, I doubt it is worth Shopsmith to start up the production lines.

I can understand your disbelief

dusty wrote:This is weird while at the same time interesting. Who originated the joint-matic and who now owns the rights? From what I have just read, it seems that Strong, Delta and Shopsmith have all had their fingers in this pie.

Now we have this individual, who reports to me the son of the original designer, contemplating a resurrection.

Unless he does a major redesign (or has permission from the current holder of the patents) I don't think he can do that. How long do patents remain in effect? The answer to that question may say it all.
There is more to this patent question than you know. I never posted this to talk about patents but my question has been answered there is alot of interest in Strong Tool Design being brought back. Thanks for your response!!

dusty wrote:The joint-matic was available from Shopsmith when I bought my 510. From that, I conclude that the patent rights that Shopsmith had (if any) would have expired.

Once issued, can patent rights be extended?

BTW - CDR38 - I seriously doubt that there is a market for a new version of the joint-matic.
Thank You for responding, is there a modern machine out today that does the same thing as good or better. Are you familiar with the miter-matic?

holsgo wrote:I've heard great things about this tool. The control is supposed to be great. I haven't used it, but from a recommendation, the thing is worth getting your hands on. I've seen some come up on ebay but the shipping was a bit much. I'd like to see where this thread is going and maybe someone who owns one can do a YouTube of it in use. Supposed to offer fine control of the attached router very much like a horizontal milling machine, kinda.
Thanks for responding keep watching!

Perhaps not nasty but more like childish I was trying to be nice.
You can't tell me your secret soo I won't play with you.

When I worked in the corporate world I was often asked similar questions and if I could I gave an answer instead of saying "I'm not telling"

I fully agree the question was badly asked but come on give the guy a break, if you have an opinion offer it if not don't say anything but don't stand there and say I know but I'm not telling.
I never realized there would be so much negativity on this quest. Sorry if my question seemed vague I will edit post shortly hopefully to everyones satisfaction.

I believe I might have access to manual that came with the strong model (pre- shopsmith). I will check on that later tonight. I guess it could be loan out for educational purposes. I don't think it should posted here without permission.

If you can host the pdf let me know. One time offer............
