rjent, thanks, it is a soft wood compression wise, but funny, when parring with chisels, it is harder to cut then when parring ash. Maybe thats why they use it so much for rafters and joist. I agree on the splintering thing, like cedar.

Using gloves when handling fir is a really good thing to do!
Yes I have offspring.]their[/U] offspring.
So, ice and fan are your idea of an artic cooler. Slightly more efficient that a swamp cooler!:D

Oh contrare again immense one ....
A "Swamp Cooler" out here is 10 times more efficient than HVAC. Many people who have moved here from other humid parts of the country installed HVAC units and most have changed back to Swamp. No compairison .....

My efficiency statement made no reference to HVAC.
The 'artic' cooler will be more efficient than the 'swamp' cooler due to the (anti)thermal kick gained from the state change from solid to liquid that the ice contributes. I am assuming the fan is a constant for both.
However, in the interests of 'full' disclosure, one cannot really ignore the difference in how the water or ice are obtained in the first place.
If ice were abundant locally one would not need a cooler!;)
P.S. Well! That explains an earlier post re 80-90 % humidity out thar!

Methinks I may be missing something in this disscussion artic is a word that is not in our vocabulary .... LOL
FWIW, when our humidity is high, usually the air is pretty cool (60 to 80) because of virga and rain when we are in our "wet season". When we are in our wet season the air is much cooler so the swamp box only has to drop the incoming air by about 10 or 15 degrees to keep the house cool .....

Learned it in pilot school...
In meteorology, virga is an observable streak or shaft of precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates or sublimes before reaching the ground.

I cut the ice in the winter and store it in the ice house packed in saw dust. Messier then a swamp cooler though.
Rjent, why are the SC better then AC out there? I am guessing because it is soooo dry that you get a really great evaperation ratio?
3rd generation JPGs, cant wait for them here

Good Guess! A swamp cooler (evaporating cooler) won't work in South Texas where RH is always at due point in every morning (365 days /year) and gets down to maybe 50% at noon.
They are the preferred cooling solution here in the Mojave Desert. RH from single digits to as high as 55% some days/

Fear not! Two of them are females(although one is crafty so a transition to woodworking
is possible).
The boys are not currently inclined. Too busy with sports(10 yr old) and the older one too busy chasing skirts.
Now there is always a possibility of the fourth gen. . . .
