Just to make it clear. Take the carriage off the way tubes and leave it in the same orientation. Then take the headstock off and turn it around. Reinstall the carriage then the headstock .

That is what I FINALLY saw!!! To apologize for!! My bad!!

I think the sequence of events is slightly different than stated here.

First we must remove the tie bar.

Then I'd take the carriage off knowing that it goes back on in the same orientation.

Then I would take the headstock off, turn it around and reinstall it. WRONG...put the carriage back on before the headstock.

Then I would put the carriage back on.

Last of all, reinstall the tie bar.

That's what Beeg said to do in the beginning.!!!!

Except I would re install the carriage, then the headstock.

You are absolutely right. The headstock goes on last except for the tie bar.

There is a reason I always list stuff as if I was assembling it in drill-press mode.

From bottom to top works the same, whichever side you're looking at.

You old men are making my head spin. I am thinking that you mean that the headstock should be on the right hand side in the above picture, facing the other way ( toward the center). Yeah?

I spent a few minutes with a scotch brite this morning and some oil. everything I worked on is turning freely. I have not touched the headstock, as getting our old VW running is my main nights & weekends job right now.

FORGET right hand left hand side. YES the headstock needs to face the other way. BTW, the ponytail is what locks and unlocks the way tubes so you can raise or lower it from the drill press position. Also in the pic, the ponytail is unlocked.
