What you are missing is the the radial and axial vectors are perpendicular. It is impossible for them to interact.
Try this experiment. Put your car in neutral, approach it from the passenger door and push toward the driver door. You will never reach the street.

Only because the wheels do not rotate that direction. Push with a bulldozer and it will reach the street.

I did not miss that they are orthogonal. With vectors there is a resultant vector created by the two. Think of the two vectors as two sides of a triangle. The hypotenuse would be the resultant vector(not quite accurate, but the magnitude is). Think of the vectors as the sides of a box, the resultant is a diagonal with all three sharing the same 'corner'. Changing one(or both) of the original vectors alters the resultant.

Fly an airplane with a cross wind, and you will drift 'off course'. Your 'forward' motion must be altered so that the resultant vector points to your destination. Same thing with a boat and cross currents.
