I see what you are saying. With no table leg in the bracket, the knob will not tighten flush against the bracket because of how the threads end at the knob. I guess it's a good thing I got 3/4" after all!
You have an interesting idea on drilling a relief in the top of the threaded bracket hole. I may explore this if I trim the stud just a hair too short.
In the past, I've had good success with doing this by hand if the drill bit is sharp and the workpiece is soft. You just chuck the drill bit and turn the bracket against the drill bit by hand to chamfer it a bit.
