Everett has hit exactly what I am looking into. Trying to decide if buying used and saving $300 is worth accepting a SS with miles already driven and at the mercy of how the previous owner (or owner's helpers) treated the standard accessories.
My math looks like this in order to upgrade a used SS to a Mark 7 and assuming that all accessories need to be purchased new.
If upgrading a 500, than I would have about $450 to spend on a used 500.
If upgrading a 510, than I would have about $1300 to spend on a used 510.
If upgrading a 520, than I would have about $1750 to spend on a used 520.

This thread has really helped me to confirm that I would not be happy with a 510 without upgrading it.
I have also learned that while the PowerPro would be awesome, there are a lot of woodworkers that feel the old headstock is still pretty good and that I would probably be happy with a 520 for a while.
A well maintained properly aligned Shopsmith of any vintage can serve you well, even a 10E, depending on what you do. My vision for my 10E is for example to turn bowls and I am looking for a good value in a speed changer to help slow it down just a bit. As you note, there is a investment return based on what options you need to do the jobs you want to do in wood working.

My 50th Anniversary 520 is really an exceptionally good machine, as are my two 510's.

If you are patient, and willing to travel a bit to get them, values can be found on all things Shopsmith.

Shopsmith also runs sales on a lot of things from time to time.

One of the strategies you will learn to master is that shortly after an order with Shopsmith, you will frequently get an email offer for free shipping on your next order, if placed within a few days.

Sometimes you can save a good bit on shipping if you are ordering something heavy, by splitting up your ordering. Best plans can be thwarted if that free shipping offer doesn't come as expected.

Well, I guess that is where I am at an advantage. I will be PCSing at the end May from Texas to New York. Now that my eyes are opened, I am on the lookout for a deal with the most SPT regardless the model while on my road trip.
You are right, there are a lot of deals out there!

Finally! I read through every word of this most interesting thread.

I most wholeheartedly agree with Dusty in this matter, while extending my utmost respect of both "Ed's" posts - (Ed in Tampa and Ed reible).

Regardless of mow many measurements and adjustments are made, the most favored unit of our folks is very personal and depends, a whole lot, on how the various parts on a machine fit.

The parts on my 510 must fit very well because I find my machine quite accurate and fun to use. I have never measured the distances between the extension tubes and the rails, and don't intend to. If I had received a mis-manufactured table or fence, or other part, I know I would be going for a 520. But for now, I'm very satisfied with my 510. Why change?

I bought a PowerPro DIY not because I needed it, but because I wanted it. If I ever want the 520 upgrade, I'll probably get one.

As I mentioned in a previous post in this thread, I ordered the 510 to 520 upgrade a couple weeks ago when it went on sale. It eventually shipped and tonight was the first warm night I've been able to get out into the shop since it arrived. I had watched the installation video and read the instructions already, and so tonight I actually went out and installed it and everything went smoothly.

More importantly--it is awesome! The tubes slide in easily (an issue I had with my 510), the tables all line up, the knobs are much easier and more comfortable to tighten down than the 510. I am a little sad to give up the 510 fence because of the jigs, but the 520 fence is a beast and I know once I get some good jigs worked out for it, I'll be doubly happy with it. I know I already said it, but thanks again to everyone on this forum for always giving such great advice, pros and cons, to help make informed decisions.

I was so excited for progress, I even oiled my '82 and next I'm going to finish the base for the Shop Deputy for him!
