Went out to the garden this morning to water and saw something new. We have a few hummingbirds around and I could hear one buzzing but it was not the usual quick flyby. This was a very steady, rithmic buzzing. Not receding or approaching so I stopped and focused on where it was coming from. Sure enough, a Rufus was swaying back and forth about 20" above the ground about 15' away. I watched him for a good minute as he focused on courting the lady humming bird on the ground before i found her. She was sort of buried in the brush just watching him go back and forth for about 2 minutes I'd guess between rests. This went on for ten minutes before I had to get going. Kinda cool.

I like this idea! We have an old set of 12(?). My wife even knew where we stored them.

I stop at the hardware and got a piece of pvc pipe but the 3/4" dark version which comes in 5' lengths for $1.20. It might be too flexible and come to find out will not fit our flag holder..... Anyway some progress in the mental realm at least. It OK our Montana flag did get here today anyway.

So the reason my Montana flag did not arrive here yesterday is that it went to Baltimore Maryland rather then Aurora IL, it arrived there at 1:16 AM yesterday. Yea I don't get it either.

I decided to track it and found the route went a little off course. Maybe got on the wrong truck or ???

So now unless it goes off in another direction I can expect it on Tuesday, they gave the date of Monday but since it is a holiday I'm thinking it will be Tuesday.

Not a rush thing but interesting how things go, just glad it wasn't something that I really needed.

I'd love to make a "sloppy" bandsaw box like that, swampgator. My family would think I was a woodworking genius, and the wife might not roll her eyes so much when yet another machine follows me home from Craigslist.
Thank you, Dennis, for your kind words. I thought I had posted but can't find it with this Nook. Some adjustments needed on my part. I made this box for a lady in mid-Florida who was supportive and assisted my wife's deceased baby sister. She really angered me and I put the box on a shelf for over 1 year to consider my options. I forgot that I had not sanded out some overflow glue. It showed up on the first coat of lacquer. Then in a hurry I got too aggressive in sanding, so that is the explanation for the "sloppy ".

This is a pattern from the book of Lois Ventura Keener which is available on Amazon. The price has dramatically risen, so if you need or want copies, please pm me. At the time of publication she lived in Eastern PA. If you have a bandsaw you can do these. They average 6" X 6" X 12" long. This tree was planted by my wife's oldest sister and the history is on the bottom. It has 5 coats of Valspar clear lacquer with a couple coats of JPW. The porous ends will absorb much more finish. I am confident that you can do these. The would be great to have one up on the wife.

If you need a gift for a father or for yourself and you like the designs they have, have at it or if you prefer go for it.

I'm adding short sleeve t-shirt and the hat to my collection..... I do ask that you not use my name, please use your own.

She has been nervous and apprehensive of her bandsaw. I figured this was a perfect project for it and grabbed the bull by the horns and took charge, LOL.
Some of the pieces so far.Image
I made that little jig as a template for all 4 sides.
Skizzity,

That's a nice start, has she finished it yet? I've been admiring stained glass projects like this, maybe will look into learning it one day.

Thanks. The third side is almost ready for solder. The fourth side is in the middle of designing. Not sure if the bottom will be a single piece of clear glass or what yet.
I got tired of glass yesterday and wanted to do some woodworking. Made my first bandsaw box. Very rough but the daughter loves it.Image

Steve, I started this reply once on my phone but seemed to have deleted or lost it, It's called Intarsia.

You should visit the Scrollsaw forum at scrollsawer.com some day, they are a treasure trove of info. I do my round overs and shaping with a combination of belt sander, Dremmel and flap sanders. nothing too fancy. After getting the individual pieces to the thickness that looks good, I start shaping at the belt sander, then if needed, use a dremmel with drum sanders of various diameters, although I didn't on this one, then us a flap sander to smooth and blend it all out. Once all the pieces look good, I'll stain, let them dry and usually lightly flap sand one more time before gluing them all to a backer board. Finish off with a spray varnish. This projects total time might be 2 1/2 hours and that's including dry time.
