They require a 3/32" kerf which is 3 - 1/2" H X 1 - 1/8" deep on the bed rail.

Depending on the width of the bed rail why would you want to open the whole thing up?

Just seems a mortise slot sized to fit that hardware would work fine and be more rigid ,,jmo

1 1/8" depth isn't that much .jmo

You are absolutely correct but in order to clear the kerf deep enough to facilitate the hardware (1 1/8" x 3 1/2") it is necessary to make the cut as shown (cutting the kerf in to the end nearly 6". So as to not have that void, the filler is required.

Sorry that my drawings and explanation was not good enough to make that clear.

Final result would be a rectangular slot in the bottom edge measuring 1 1/8" deep and 3 1/2" high all done with a thin kerf saw blade (no milling or drilling required).
