One other note on Evaporust: It works faster if room temperature is not cold. See the container for more info.

If you use it outdoors in an unheated shop in the winter, it may take two days or more to work. It will work, but take longer.

It is best if the item is cleaned of oils etc. as the oil coating will keep the liquid from actually reaching the rust.

After trying Evaporust as JPG and Everett have suggested setting the Shopsmith in Drill Press mode it may slip off or take little convincing. Don't buy a bearing puller yet.

It is not a Shopsmith/Magna Model 10 center. From the first Model 10E to today the Drive and Dead Centers have had only two changes each. The Drive Center went from the original 1/4" set screw to a 5/16" set screw and later the black protective coating added. The Dead Center with a Morse Taper used in the Tailstock went from a 60 degree point to a cup center and later the black protective coating was added. There is no need for a 5/8" spindle attached cup center on a Shopsmith Model 10 or Mark series machine. The only way to effectively use that third party center would be to attach it to the Tailstock Chuck Arbor to use as a replacement if the normal cup center gets lost or the point is too damaged.

Shopsmith/Magna did not use two set screws to attach their Arbors, Chucks and Shaper Spindles, only the 2-1/2" Jointer Head had two set screws. The only 5/8" Arbor I am not sure of is shown on Page 1, Figure 1 of the Original 10E Manual (see Everett's restored copy) from 1947 that went out with the first 250 10E's sent to Montgomery Ward stores October 1947. It appears different than the 5/8" Arbor part number 126-1X & later 12 031 (without or with wrench cuts on the base) common to the Model 10's. If Magna used the 5/8" Arbor shown in the Original 10E Manual for the early 10E's it was quickly replaced by part # 126-1X.

Equally, the arbor could have come from one of the numerous foreign made Shopsmith clones etc. through the years and not be a Shopsmith part at all.

The other thing is that it could be a prototype in the picture that never actually shipped with production units. I think we have seen that before. I don't remember what/where but Everett probably knows.

So, I guess all the two screw arbors etc. that came with my 10E were third party procured originally.

JPG you have an early eastern plant 10E as shown by it's serial number. It should have came with a 5/8" Arbor part number 126-1x without the machined base for using a wrench on it. It was a nice change in the Arbor when they added the machined sides to the base for a wrench. Without it pipe wrenches were really "buggering" up the base surface. The PDF has a picture with most of the Arbors made for the Shopsmith. Other arbors like the 1/2", the Shaper Spindle, Router Chucks, etc. would have been purchased separately. Mike Young told me the reason for the Spindle being 5/8" was it was an industry standard. Mike is one of the "old timers" from Shopsmith and still does demos around the country. A lot of other companies made parts that will fit the 5/8" Spindle. Out of the 20 Model 10s I have owned and I still have 6 of them, four of which are awaiting restoration, I have gotten a number of non Shopsmith parts with them including Arbors. It just happens.

Back to the original question: Were you successful in getting them apart?
