No, but yours 'appears' to be the water pump type. Check out the end of the shaft.[/quote]

The difference that is seen in the end of the shaft does seem to be a "time marker" that differentiate those shafts done before for idler shaft redesign from those done after that redesign. However, I see no operation changes or changes that would indicate a change in diameter (OD) of the shaft.

The newer shafts are slightly longer but the difference is in the length of the shaft that protrudes out of the headstock.

Thanks for all the pics, Dusty! That soft feathered-in corner radius on the end of my shaft does indeed look like the water-pump shaft style.

Looking at your end-view pic (third from the last), I can see small step-up shoulders on the new-style shafts with the blue seals, just about in line with the inner bearing race. That would explain how they adapt the 5/8” shaft to a different bearing ID.

On my unit, there is no such step-up shoulder before the shaft enters the bearing seal. I’m certain of this, because I felt along the shaft with a dental pick, and encountered nothing before hitting the rubber seal. Which is not to say that there isn’t a step-up just behind those seals. At this point, I’m starting to think that likely. But I’m not going to tear mine apart to find out.

Good Eye. I saw that but thought it was the inner race. I am unable to measure it accurately but it is about a 1mm step. This explains how 17 x30 x 3 bearings (6903RZ) can be used on a 5/8" shaft.

While talking about shafts, I noticed still another minor change. The motor shaft on the PowerPro is not a 5/8" shaft. It is closer to 1" (25mm) and the key way is wider (6mm). No big deal...but a change.

I can now accept the theory that some idler shafts were released without the shaft being turned down to 5/8". My question now is about the other end of that shaft. Did it get turned or are the sheaves capable of accepting that oversize shaft.

The 'detail' that led me to conclude it being a water pump shaft.bearing is the marking on the end of the shaft.

In that third from last pix, all three shafts appear stepped.

The PP motor shaft and keyway being metric is to be expected considering it's source.

I think the short end did not get reduced. I simply cannot envision a sheave design alteration.

I also think it being a metric pump bearing/shaft is the result of declining requirements for them(no more fan/water pumps in transverse autos) causing the 5/8" version being no longer available. Ya a LOT of conjecture!

That end-view pic of Dusty's definitely does make it look like there's a step in the weter-pump shaft. But as mine doesn't have one, I looked really closely at that pic and the other ones that Dusty took. I finally decided that what looks like a step in the shaft is really just the square end of the black rubber seal, with light reflecting off of it.

If you look real close at the pic of my shaft in an earlier post, you can see the same feature on the seal. And I know it's elastomer, because I probed it with a dental pick.

The bearings with the blue seal are definitely stepped. I feel a hard stop when I slide a pick on the shaft toward the bearing. I DO NOT feel a hard stop when doing the same on the idler shaft with the black seal. In fact, the pick goes in under the bearing some. Now that does not mean it is not stepped but I can not feel under the bearing far enough to say for sure.

I measured the bore on a single floating sheave at 14.83mm (5/8").

This may not be clear evidence except to me but I am absolutely convinced that this shaft is not stepped. I have disrupted the seal where I thought the step might be. It is not.

There is no way that a 17mm shaft would fit in that sheave.
