Basic setup of Jointech on the shopsmith 520

Post by fixit »

I'm the one who experienced the problem mentioned by reible in post #28.

I have the redesigned clamps for the Jointech system and am very happy with them. I agree with Ed about the price for retrofitting a system but that price is for a "complete" clamp (including ALL the metal parts). Those metal parts are not inexpensive (nor are the UHMW plastic parts) and I can't see iTools company giving them away.

When I thought about it I realized iTools is only doing what any smart business does on selling upgrades. Shopsmith won't replace your guill with a two bearing quill for free. That improvement was made after someone bought the machine with the single bearing quill. So if you want to upgrade you have to pay what they ask for the retrofit. Same thing applies in the case of Jointech.

Ernest told me he would be shipping ALL new orders with the newly designed clamps.

When I looked Ernest in the eye and told him about the redesign of the 520 rail with the magnetic strip he was genuinely surprised. He was not aware of the change. And within a month he had a fix designed and available for sale. In my opinion that's first class customer support. The price may be more than some want to pay but that's an individual choice. Ernest has done everything he can to provide a reasonable solution to the problem.

I'm encouraged over Jointech's decision to include the updated fence in all new orders. However I do believe that since Jointech sold system they said fits a 520 and it did not I think they need to make that right. I would guess this would be a small number of people that had 520 with ripscales and ordered the Jointech before Jointech was aware of the change.

I do agree than anyone that had jointech for some other model SS and upgrades to the rip scale 520 should have to pay for the upgrade of the Jointech also.

Hi Ed,

I agree with you. If I had ordered the Jointech after I had the SS rip scale rails I would want Jointech to replace the clamps. But they could do that by just replacing the UHMW part. That part simply screws onto the clamps in place of the original Jointech clamps. They would not have to replace the whole assembly.

In my case I had the Jointech before I had the rip scale modification to the 520 rails so iTools had no obilgation to replace anything for me. What they sold me originally worked perfectly on the old "non rip scale" 520 rails.
