Headstock Reassembly Idler Shaft

That small retaining spring prevents the idler sheave from moving on the shaft towards the control sheave end. It seats in a groove on the shaft. The keyway bent end MUST be inserted into a 'hole' prior to the idler sheave going on the shaft. The idler sheave holds the key in that hole.

So the assembly sequence is, insert bent end of key into hole, slip the idler sheave onto the shaft and over the key/hole, slip the retaining clip on the shaft and down to the groove, then slip the control sheave on.
