Tom,

I downloaded your template and completed lesson one. I forund out why the layers wouldn't switch. It was operator error! I was turning on the radio button for the layer I wanted to hide. I discovered that you don't turn on the button, you just uncheck the layer box.

Brent, glad you got it working. The radio button only controls the "Active" layer, which is the layer any new geometry is created on. And by default, the Active layer has to be visible...

Thanks Tom, Gonna do lesson two tonite. I've already learned more that I ever knew about being able to seperate the parts in lesson one.

Tom, Got thru lesson 3. I downloaded your cutlist, but don't know how to get it into the template.

Thanks for your lessons. They sure helped me understand Sketchup.

Brent, glad to hear you got over your hurdle and are working now. I'm working on Lesson 4 currently. I plan on covering the use of CutList, but need to cover a couple other concepts first in order to understand and make the best use of the CutList plug-in.

CutList doesn't get "put into the template", once you install it (unzipping the contents into the Plugins folder) the next time you start SketchUp it will show up in the Plugins menu option at the top of the program.

Tom, I have another question for you. Can the dimension layers, of the ends crossbrace and top, be consolidated to one screen so they can be printed on one page instead of 3 seperate pages?

Brent, not directly... If you purchase the PRO version of SketchUp, ($495) it comes with a companion program called LayOut which will do exactly what you want. There IS a work-around whereby you can obtain what you are looking for though, and it's $495 cheaper You can export the 3 views as 2D Graphics (raster/bitmap images) and then use a program such as MSPaint, PaintShop, PhotoShop or Corel Draw/Paint to merge the 3 individual files into one large image and print it from there.

Another advantage of SketchUp PRO is the ability to create dynamic components. The free version allows you to use dynamic components but not create new ones yourself.

The next lesson is now available. This lesson builds upon what was learned in lessons 1-3, re-enforces off-axis construction, teaches creating and using User-Defined Axes for constructing off-axis geomery and using Components and SketchUp's 3D Warehouse.

Thanks Tom, I think I'll try it the low buck (cheap) way. If I can't get that to work, I can print a lot of pages for $495.......

Brent, I know what you mean. If you look at the plans on Lesson 4, that's how I did that set of plans. 3 separate Scenes in SketchUp, merged into one file in CorelDraw and exported out of there. It works.
