Actually, that is not a shocking price for a component that is undoubtedly proprietary and crucial to the proper operation of the equipment in which it is installed.

The Speed Control Box (514736), used on the Scroll Saw and Surface Planer, lists for $324.63. There is one selling on eBay right now for a lot less. I'm tempted.

My guess is that this price is the retail replacement cost for the card. I would certainly hope that Shopsmith gets them much cheaper on a wholesale level if they intend to build very many headstocks.

What Shopsmith pays for the controller card is of no consequence; what they do with it during the pricing process is what becomes important.

Actual cost + markup + profit + R&D recovery + shipping + handling + tax +... +...
