I agree that lawyers get involved too much in things (just look at all those lawyers in Washington, DC, that represent us) but Shopsmith still sells the Model 500 insert with the larger hole for use in conjunction with either shaper cutters or drum sander.
Dusty, if you have the 510/520 shaper fence, perhaps you could mount it with the two versions of the inserts and see if there is possibly an issue regarding hole location and fence travel. I just have the older Model 500 fence.

Are the starting pin threaded holes also used to attach the dust collector fitting(elbow) from below?

I was looking for that explanation too. Looking at Dusty's pictures, though, I thought I had an explanation, but as my mind processed it more, I'm still confused.
If the insert with the small hole was the original, and that hole were simply enlarged, then the side of the insert would be cut. That small hole is off-center with the insert. The larger hole is centered in the insert.
But why is the small hole off center? Is it to provide more structural support on one side of the hole? Would one side bear the brunt of some pressure increasing the chance of the insert becoming bent at that location, so the hole is off-center to give the insert more structural support there?

As we all know, the table inserts sit a few thousandths below the table top. I would guess that the hole in the shaper insert is off-center to allow more of the workpiece to be on the table rather than on the insert.

Not to be off topic, but on my first pic where you see the greenie fence, it looks as though I'm missing a knob. Any thoughts where to aquire? Anything else missing that you guys can see?

You are not missing a knob.........that model fence only has one!:(
The later 510 fence has two. See second pic in my earlier post.

Just guessing, but offering another angle on this. Perhaps if one also gets the under-the-table Speed Increaser, then it "wants" the hole to be a little bit closer to the headstock ? I don't know, though, since I don't have one....

That guess is as good as mine. I only have a 500, not a 510/520 so I'm just guessing too.

The fence is adjustable left/right, in/out and width of space between the two sides. Couple this with the table being adjustable in/out and there is a pretty good range.
I have shown pictures but they have not answered any questions that I might have on this.
