That's not always a bad thing but sometimes it is. IF there is a problem after shipping it can get hairy to get it straightened out. I'm willing to deal with it if it helps keep SS in business, I just like to have better communication (it's a pet peeve)

I don't think drop shipping from the supplier is a bad thing at all; however, I do believe that Shopsmith should be a little more upfront with its customers about what is and isn't in stock and where it is coming from. But this isn't just a Shopsmith issue, I've had similar experiences with other suppliers.

I am happy to report that Shopsmith with the help of a very nice member of this forum came through for me and I will have my birthday gift, a nova G3 at sale price since I contacted them before the end of the sale.
Thank you all for your nice comments and for your offers to be my neighbourly drop for this occasion. It is very nice to have so many nice neighbours in the US for us Canadians.

Back to Posts 5 and 6 Where the question was Will the G3 grip square stock?

What works (best)? After I ordered one, I thought the G3 doesn't have flattened V jaws to set on the middle of the sides of the square workpiece.

So what to do? Put the points of the square stock in the middle of the quarter circle jaws (and don't worry about it)? Should I mark a spot on the square stock to realign it with jaw one of the chuck?

It got me worried, because when thinking about the offer, I glued a square on a 6 x 6 x 1 piece of willow using the diagonals on the 6 x 6 to position the square, a point on each diagonal. Otherwise, I would have drilled a hole in the square and used a small diameter rod to position it over the intersection diagonals on the larger square. Now I'm wondering if I made the square large enough. Oh, it was glued on with paper between it and the willow, thinking that it will be removed after turning. Part of the reason was to avoid a very thin center of the turning with a mortise to place over the chuck jaws.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, the answer is that the four corners of your turning stock go into the gaps between the jaws of the chuck, not in the jaws themselves.

Things are looking up, I think.

It appears that I can use the G3 to clamp either round or rectangular stock. It also appears that they are not on back order. My order status has changed from "in process" to "in shipping". I don't know if that is different than "shipped" but shipped sounds better than back ordered.

Now, if someone can just confirm that I can use the G3 to hold soft metals - all is looking good.
