I think you want to run the black (hot) wire through the two leads on the replacement switch, connecting the whites together with a wire nut. And, don't forget the green or ground wire to the chassis.

That be correct(switch the hot black wires).

A 20A switch is an improvement over the original, and it be the turn off that will test the switch. Next time get a double pole switch!;)

.250 quick disconnect tabs. Relatively low cost and I got them in about 5 days.

I have been using this switch for years as I understand (discussions with seller) that the switching contact points are larger/heavier to handle the arcing when switching ON or OFF for this 7300001 - DPST On-Off Toggle Switch - .250 flat terminals switch.

You guys are great! I appreciate the info. I'd have taken more time and started here, but I was putting this thing back together Wednesday and the switch failed during that. Since my son-in-law is coming tomorrow to pick it up, I found myself in a time crunch, and thus the trip to the big box store.

Anywho.... white to white, black thru the switch and send this thing home. It's not the full restore that I would like to have done, but he needs a drill press and repainting it will become his project.

IIRC, I have seen that number on a Gardner-Bender switch I purchased at Ace.

A few years back I got a Gardner-Bender DPST 20A 125VAC switch at Sears for my greenie. Don't know if they still have them. It's probably the same one that Ace has.
