Thanks for the comments on the miter face. Picked up some $0.75/pound scrap and used the 12" sander to true and finish.

Problem with the miter gauge lifting when using the clamp resolved by clamping the gauge to the table.

Dusty's comment of gears in motion may be correct. The holes I drilled yesterday are quite round (3/8" dowel needed some effort to insert but no detectable gaps). Then again I only used the first 7/8" of quill extension. I shall also check when more fully extended.

The saw blade or sanding disk could be used to measure run-out/movement with a dial gauge.

I suspect I am expecting too much and any observed play/alignment issues (see my vertical drilling post) are, in practice, irrelevant.

If one looks closely enough at some things that are functionally adequate one can usually find imperfection.

Important thing is, are those imperfections going to cause a significant operational problem.

Afterall 0.0001" clearance(very near perfect fit) will seize in a heartbeat due to temperature variations etc.!:eek:

The saw blade or sanding disk could be used to measure run-out/movement with a dial gauge. Only IF they are themselves flat!!!! A dial gauge contacting the outer circumference of the shaft is the thing to 'measure'.
