That is the method that was being taught back when Ifirst acquired a Shopsmith., IT WORKS. If the dowel (I use a long allen wrench) remains in near contact with the blade the miter track is parallel to the blade.

Two lines (surfaces) at all points equal distant are said to be parallel. The miter track is equal distance from the blade.

I tried it once and I still check and adjust the fence just to be sure I am ok.
