Shopsmith Forums

A year or so ago. We did change signup process. We now require clicking on a link sent via email to verify a valid email account before we allow posting. Seems to have reduced the frequency of spam.

For now, I don't see any reason to delete inactive accounts. I'm not expecting to run out of account numbers anytime soon.

As noted, no harm seems to come from the plethora of inactive "members". On a few forums I'm on, they will delete inactive members after a certain period of time, but in this case that seems like a potentially bad idea as I'm sure at least some % of new members are a SS owner who came searching the answer to a question or two or to otherwise lurk and may not visit again until they have another question or other reason to return...

new member signup has DROPPED dramatically since whatever happen with the SS forum site on 04/27/14.

I doubt the completeness of that list. I have added almost that many to my ignore list.

LOOKS like Admin dropped about 23300 inactive accounts.

Since admin haspurged their files on inactive members, I guess I'll purge my Ignore List.

Fred, only because you asked, I'll share with you everything that I remember about each and everyone of them.

However, don't get all excited because you are going to be disappointed when you hear who/what they were.

Back at the beginning of the year, almost everyday there were two or three different spammers who logged onto the Shopsmith site. Many of them displayed links to web sites of their own. They were using the Shopsmith site to expand their own global market (their mailing list). When I detected one of these, I would inform Admin and at the same time add their username to my ignore list. The idea was that if they logged into ther site again, I would get an indication that I did not want to click on them. Many times Admin would remove the username before most of the forum checked in.

Now you know the whole story. I told you that you would be disappointed.

Incidentally, this is the only way that I have ever used the ignore list. Why, because the Ignore function really does not Ignore. If the Ignored User posts anything, the person who is attempting to Ignore will be informed that he/she has posted.
