Many of the items that we buy today are getting more costly without us even being aware. Tricky packaging (I consider it deceptive advertising) is making it possible.
By reducing the volume of the content while maintaining the package size, we are tricked into paying more and don't even know it.
I opened a can of whole tomatoes yesterday that was about half of normal (3 small tomatoes the rest juice) when the can is normally packed tight. I notice this because tomatoes are one of my snack items; I eat a bowl of tomatoes often. Less than I used to though because the doctor says no salt.

My 10" blades are still 10". They do dost more, though.
OTOH, one can buy a computer today that is infinitely more capable than one bought 15 years ago, for 1/2 the price, or less.

I remember those 7-Up Bars :-) I think I paid more like $0.25ea by the time I was buying them in the early 70's…maybe I'm wrong and they were cheaper…hard to tell anymore. I used to scrounge empty coke and RC Cola bottles and return them for the $0.10 deposit and buy baseball cards and a soda and candy bar…those were the days.benush26 wrote:6 for a quarter anything by Mars! I miss those old reusable coke bottles…now days kids drink these massive cokes in plastic bottles that cost upward of $2 each and at least here in CA they charge a $0.10 recycling fee for the bottle but it's a PITA to ever get that back.

I always try to bundle all of my SS needs into one order and this seems to save on shipping - adding that handful of extra smaller items in with bigger items rarely increases the shipping much, if at all. As for the dust chute having an $8+ shipping charge - it's not about the price of an item or even entirely the weight - the shipping charges at UPS and Fed-Ex is based on a combination of size and weight, so something can be as light as balsa wood but the box size will then dictate the shipping charge. It's rare I see anything shipped via Fed Ex or UPS that would be any cheaper than $8-$10. I agree with USPS making regular Priority Mail boxes hard to find at the PO - Flat Rate is great for heavy stuff but they try to lure you into using those regardless and they are a was of $$ for lighter stuff.

There is a company (still in the U.S.) JRCIGAR (yes they sell gars) and they charge a flat rate of $5.00 for shipping (UPS ground - you pay more for faster service); any quantity you order, 5 bucks. This company is the largest seller of cigars in the U.S (he advertizes the World)., and he is already a discounter, so he's not making it up in the price of the product. He also uses good packing materials. They also get hit by the GOV $1.00/stick to pay for CHIP (children's Health Insurance Program). Like the gas tax to pay for roads, ever wonder where that money really goes!! But I digress.
Now if this company can make that business model work, why can't others? Yes, I know volume. But how do you build volume? In my book, if you don't nickle and dime customer at every turn.....guess where business gravitates. How do you think JR got big. He started as a corner market in NYC. Just throwing it out there.

Rockler, Woodcraft, Lee Valley - all have free shipping offers from time-to-time, especially Rockler for established customers.

Shipping charge limits purchase
Truth be know, shipping charge is why I do not get my consumable supplies from SS. The last sale on those ceramic sanding belts; could still get them for less overall expense at Lowes unless I bought in large quantity.neal560sl wrote:I just wish that SS would offer free shipping once in a while. I truely feel that they would see enough increased sales to more than pay for it.

BTY, ceramic belts are great, pricey but last and clog little and clean very easy.

Back in the fall I needed more hook-n-loop disc's for my random orbit sander and stocked up on various grits from a place called Online Industrial Supply. The ones I got was their standard run of the mill brand, but I have been impressed. They have lasted 2-3 times as long as what I had been using(Norton brand), and the prices were decent with shipping only $4.95 and if your order is over $150.00 it's free shipping.
