I have had one soaking for over month. I looked at it the other day and did not like what I found. Realize it was outdoors and subjected to large temperature fluctuations.
The evaporust is 'black'. There was some air in the tube, and the top of the tube had some 'new' rust.
I think the chelation effect has been depleted.
I flipped the tube(topsy turvey) and put it all back together. Will flush it all out with on a warm day and replenish the evaporust.
True it does not attack the base metal, but it does get depleted. I think black is an indicator. The darker, the less effective it becomes.

The pits are a 'visual' thing.shaun.farmer wrote:The way tubes are pitted pretty bad. I'm hoping after the cleaning they will come out usable.

Hard to picture what would be stored on SS tubes that would cause scoring...how about a photo of the grooves? Certainly you don't want any grooves ro scoring resulting in metals that "stands proud" as this would prevent the headstock from freely moving back and forth smoothly. Of course on the bench tubes this is a non-issue as nothing travels on them but the way tubes need to be smooth. Perhaps some gentle work with a hand grinder but again a photo would make it clearer what the damage is. If the way tubes are damaged to the point it's going to be a pain to bring them back to true then another option si to just buy used pair off E-Bay and keep life simple - they typically can be found there for $20-$30/pair plus ~$20 shipping...too much elbow grease needed to resurect something that I can buy and have delivered for <=$50 and I have to question what my time is worth...just food for thought if you find they are too far gone.
