I think I figured it out and think the solution is too simple. The problem is that with the lower saw guard adjusted so that it sat as close to the headstock as possible, the splitter still sat to the right of the blade. Wouldn't I just adjust the quill out to move the blade slightly to the right?

A work around, perhaps.

A solution no.

We be guessing at what you have.

There should be a way to adjust this, but we need to know what 'version' you have.

SS model(510?)

Arbor(510 version?)

lower guard version?????

upper guard version???

With pix we could 'see' the answers.

One of the intended 'features' of the SS is automatic blade alignment. Always adjusting the quill out defeats that purpose.

To begin with, it would be my recommendation that this (and maybe all) table related adjustments be done with the quill fully retracted. I do not utilize the quill for basic adjustments. I retain the quill as an option to fine tune those adjustments at performance time.

If you have a 505/510/520 and you are utilizing a lower saw guard, the riving knife is mounted in that saw guard. The position of the riving knife, with respect to the blade, is a function of how far onto the shaft the lower saw guard is mounted.

The riving knife adjustment is simply a screw that is adjusted so as to allow the lower saw guard to go onto that quill shaft just so far.

If you have a 500, you can disregard all that I have written in this thread.

Any one out there have a 500 version for 'examination'? It may help if he has that vintage parts and identifies them. I realize there has been more than one 'style'. I just do not have any.

I do not think pix of my greenie/goldie vintage will help!;)

Here are a couple of views of the splitter adjustment on my 500. As has already been noted, the 500 has a splitter attached to the upper guard while the other models have a riving knife. No vertical adjustment possible on the splitting knife.
