Good morning gentleman!!!!!!!!! We are back to it. Just having coffee, you have a bit of a jump on me this morning but some here are on ESDST, barring Sunday mornings.
I am going to mic up the thickness of the blades in the greenie and do the same of the ones in the goldie. I think, based on the overall condition and some things still in original boxes and not used of the greenie's "bling things", those blades are original. The goldie if not, have been replaced, based on that they are sitting at the bottom of the cutter head. Curious to see if they say "Disston" on them also.
For your sake and effort Dusty and for future needed info, I will take a bit more time to get a more exact diam measurement of the cutter heads on them. Should be easy, from the underside. I guess it is time to wire up the shop to the internet or go wireless so I am in constant contact with you all, along with a frig, I would have an alternate living space, grill is just outside of the shop too!!LOL I need to run an ASAP errand this morning so after I leave you here after the coffee wined up, I will be back with all that info around 10am ish CSDST.

You be right on that, table is not.
I would not expect anything less then you being the instructor JPG, with your monster truck with 5ft diam mudders on it, be patient with the old ladies!!!
Alright, diams of the cutter heads, a bit hard to get at with a 6" veneer calibers, dial version. Goldie 1.975 Greenie 1.985, close enough to know they enlarged them.
Goldie blades .750, never sharpened, made by Disston, same as greenie. Both sets ARE tapered. Dissecting a SS jointer.
Question, on both SS jointers, my Menards Clone, and my MIC free standing one, there is an octagon hole for the guard to mount on the in feed table near the rabbiting table, got that! On all 4 there is a similar hole on the out feed table near the fence area. What for?

Does this answer your question. It is where the safety feather guard mounts.

I have not seen a "Shopsmith Jointer" with holes in the outfeed table top. Maybe someone o the Menard website can help.

I can't speak for the Shopsmith jointer, but an old Craftsman jointer from the 1930s (very similar to one I'm currently restoring) had two guards.



My only guess to its function is to guard the blade when you've got the fence close to the rabbeting table... for... rabbeting? I don't know. Just a guess.

That is a pluasable answer on the rabbiting.

No Dusty, that is where the guard mounts for normal operation, it is on the out feed table, I will get a pic off after lunch.

Heath is correct. The hole in the outfeed table is for when the fence is moved towards the far side(for rabbiting edges or whatever). The guard is moved there to cover the right end of the exposed cutter head.

The 'current' design accomplishes the covering with a different design since the guard is not east to relocate.
