Well, my own "core memory" from that era has way too many parity errors to say for sure. But from judging from the greatly-magnified photo below, it could have had only two perpendicular wires per core. ]25643[/ATTACH]

Be nice if it had a sense wire!

I know next to nothing about core-memory design. Perhaps I stumbled across a photo of the ever-so-useful WOM (write-only memory) card? ;)

Yes the read wire is missing.

I think this was a mock up since every memory unit I ever saw was plain lacquered copper wires. Never colored.

To read memory they would pass a current through the write wires the two seen in this picture. If the core was holding a bit it's magnetic state would flip and that flipping would put a pulse on the read wire.

Please dispose of old electronics (e-waste) through recycling and not throwing them in the trash.

Check your local area for e-waste pickup dates. Lots of nasty (and useful to some parties) stuff in there that should not be in a landfill.

Thanks

Check with your Habitat Store. Mine here accepts electronic stuff that is on its way to the scrap pile. They sort it out and sell it to whomever.

There is also a Computer Store here that accepts it for a small fee. Yeah, they accept it and then (I suspect) part it out for their "used inventory".

It turns out that the two-wire core photo is real memory, but of a type called "word-line" core. It could be implemented with either two or three wires, and was was typically used for register memory, not main memory. So Steve was probably correct about my powers of recall. :(

I got this info from a Wikipedia article. For details on the two-wire memory, see the "Other forms of core memory" section.

Wonder how it was read????? Ferrite core memory is read by the ferrite core changing state and producing a blip on the read wire. How would they detect the change of magnetism? Read the wiki article and I still not sure how it works. Oh well those days are gone and it is now all semiconductors and magic instead ferrite cores, wires and magic.

It said it but did not explain it.

"In some designs, the word read and word write lines were combined into a single wire, resulting in a memory array with just two wires per bit."

Wow, is there a mouthful to be said about this thread!!!

Organization is something that I am trying to get better at. Better wouldn't take much? :( So I read these types of threads and try to pick up little tips to help myself out. I am not a natural at neat.

A little bit about myself. I am a auto body paint tech who now does tech/sales work. So, all of my tools came home to my "hobby shop". I call my shop a "black hole". Money goes in, very little comes out! LOL

Then I do all of my mechanical work. So, there are the tools for that.

I have a LOT of old vintage snowmobiles. You find a part for a future project, you have to purchase it and of course store it. I call this the wall of Rotax. (rotax is a brand of 2 stroke engine) Oh, and more tools.
My brother says I have tools to make tools. LOL

Image

This was before it became full. I have many not on the wall now due to not enough room........

Then there are the "deals you just cannot pass up".

A few years ago, I purchased some sandpaper from a jobber pretty cheap. Heck, a bodyman can always use sandpaper, right? 3 cabinets, 48 inches high, 30 inches wide, generally 2-3 deap like this.

Image

Image

This spring, I decided in my lifetime I will NEVER use it all. So, I have been selling/swapping it off. I have a LONG ways to go. But a small percentage has left the building!

Oh, and even with all that sandpaper, I still buy NEW sandpaper because I don't have what I really need......

Then there is automotive grade paint. Being a painter (I am building a paint booth) and knowing the price of paint, when I see a deal, well you "have" to buy it. (or better yet free).
I have my own mixing system for starters, and a rack about 8 feet wide with "over flow".

Then I have a sideline "business"
I produce retro style snowmobile helmets. There is a inventory for that.
I produce some parts which I cast. The inventory for that. (I use the shopsmith for this)
I produce polycarbonate products. (I use the shopsmith in part for this). Yep inventory.
I do some light machining to convert some readily available products into something you can't find. (shopsmith is used in this also). Yep more inventory.
I sell metalflake. Yep more inventory. Want to see a sparkly floor? LOL This gets into everything.
I sell some plastic/metal polishing supplies. More inventory

Then the shipping inventory. Tape/boxes/labels/bubblewrap/peanuts etc.

Hardware. This I struggle with. I live in the sticks. You can have every bolt/nut available to man and somehow you will not have it in stock when you need it.
So you stock a lot of hardware, but still don't have one crucial item needed for the job at hand.......

Must have parts inventory. There are things that I feel I NEED to stock. Normal wear and tear items for the mowers/snowblowers etc. If they go down, and you don't have the part.
I am probably in a hurt bag due to my location and lack of local availability for some of my stuff. Ever heard of a 725Z Schweiss? Didn't think so. LOL

What have I done to improve my mess? Every month I purchase a few more bins/totes. I try to put up some shelves.
I do try to sell unused stuff off.
I try to declutter some items every month.
The metal recycling trailer is getting more full. I haul a trailer load in about every year.

Just in time purchasing probably works better for someone who has better access than those of us in the sticks. If I need something, I have a 2 hour trip in front of me......
Or project is on hold until I pick the item up. McMasterCarr is a good friend. LOL

Anyone of you neat freaks want to take on a challenge?
