Heath:

Another picture that I cannot show to my dear wife. She has been after me for some time to make "improvements" to our mantle and I'm afraid she would expect me to duplicate the quality and beauty you have achieved.

Great job!

Something you'll find unique I think,,,,

Post by grouser »

Not so much the shape of the turning,,,but what I made it out of.
It's PINE CONE!!
To this day I have tried a dozen times or so to replicate it,, but I have not found a cone that is in the correct state of dryness as the one I turned here. If you look close you can see the unique shapes (grain?) of middle of the cone after turning off the outside. So far they have been to dry and brittle or to sappy for turning. Enjoy,,,Image

Hi Grouser! Nice work!

Do you remember the color of the cone? Was it Green, purple or brown? I assume it was still closed. What species of pine tree was it from?

Ponderosa Pine,,,,, and it was pretty tightly closed but brown in color. Very heavy too, but not very sappy.

I really think it is neat (and surprising) the cone has stabilized in it's turned shape. The finish must have sealed it somehow. I love the eye ball look the seeds and wings have given it.. Guess I'll try a couple of these someday!

Wouldn't it be fun to take on a sugar pine cone?

Oh man is that something. I love seeing all these things you guys are making. It really shows what woodworking is all about. Thanks for sharing. Here is my latest project. It took me several weeks to get done but I needed to get my shop better equipped for more projects. Got the plans from woodmagazine. The 2x4 is the jig a used to make the benchdog holes. The pencil in the picture was my last project. Happy makin' sawdust.
