I decided the XP with SP3 did everything that I needed. All of the applications that I typically used - worked. I had adequate security to include firewalls, antivirus software and malware.
Now, with the introduction of Windows 8/10 that is no longer true. Why? Because some of what I have loaded is reported by Microsoft as being incompatible (not supported by Windows) and that this applications will no longer be updated to keep pace with the computer world.
OKAY, this is just like my choosing to buy a diesel truck. I did that when diesel was cheaper than regular gasoline. Now I believe that might not have been a good choice. Truck works great, it just costs more.
I little bit different with my computer. It works fine as configured now. If I load Windows 8, my graphics card need to be replaced.
Bottom line, to remain online for the long term, I am going to need to spend money. If I chose to upgraded to Windows 8, I am still going to need to spend more money. My video card will become incompatible with my OS.
I will not be able to hold a hard line and refuse to upgrade. I dislike being forced into a corner and that is where I am at.
Yes, life is full of choices and once made you must live with the consequences. I am there.
Aren't you getting shut out of more and more websites? Almost everyday I run into a message that my web browser is getting too old. ie8 is about shot and chrome has already notified me that they no longer support my hardware.
If you remember, long ago I reported that I avoid ie8 and that I do not use Chrome. I abandoned ie as soon as I discovered firefox. No, my browser has not been the problem. Actually, so far there has been no problem. The issue is that when I run the compatibility program (mentioned earlier this thread) I am informed that W8 declares applications on my computer (those that I use regularly) to be incompatible.
I looked at Foxfire once and rejected it as being so slow and unwieldy perhaps I need to look again.
That said have you tried to research those programs that are list as not working on Windows8?
MS said office 2003 would not work on Windows 8 yet there is a YouTube video of a guy using office 2003 on Windows 8. I would do a few searches and make sure the program won't run. I had one program that owner said would not work on Windows 7 and for sure not on Windows 8. Well I installed it on both and so far it is working fine. There is no support but it does work.

You are probably correct. There are likely some applications that MS says are not compatible with Windows8. Now I have not read these specific statements anywhere other than on my own computers but if I recall correctly, the statement was that 'this application is not fully compatible' with Windows8. I read that to mean that some features may not provide the usual or anticipated results.
I have that situation with my two XP machines. They both run on XP SP3 but when using Office 2003, some features run slightly different. They work but give slightly different results. I might have made setup decisions that were not identical. The two machines were configured at different times.
It is also possible that I have two different versions of Office 2003.
How did I discover this?? You guess.

When MS Dos came out IBM had their their own version which was much faster
When MS windows came out IBM had OS then Warp which was far superior.
WordPerfect was the document processor of choice but MS gave Word out for free and everyone left WordPerfect.
Lotus was the spread sheet of choice but MS gave away excell and everyone left Lotus.
Peach text was the finance program of choice but MS gave away Money and soon everyone left for Money which later got beat out by quicken.
It seems to me Microsoft understood PC users and that they would abandon a more excellent program for a free one. And once they did and competition was dead you could charge what you will.
It is almost like PC users are getting exactly what they paid for. They weren't willing to pay so now they get Microsoft telling them what they are gonna get.
You are really not serious are you? Lotus and Wordperfect were better than Excel and Word?. Nah, your putting us on. Surely you are!!
I agree with Ed. A matter of function more closely matching need.

I installed windows on my windows 7 laptop. Then I uninstalled it!
I have a Lenovo Élan touchpad and it turned into an instant idiot when I installed windows 10. I tried to back off the driver which made the touchpad work to some extent but I could not set my desired options. I had no choice either stop using the touch pad or back off windows 10.
I backed off windows 10.

I installed 10 on my wife's Windows 7 laptop and my Windows 8.1 laptop. It seems to have slowed them down, so the jury is still out. I like the old start button and some of the settings you can do. I have one month to change them back. Time will tell.

I assume you looked here:

and downloaded this driver. Still didn't work hey?

It has taken me a couple of days to locate the information on getting "GodMode" working in windows10. If you want to get this working on your 10 system then you need to create a folder and name it:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Copy and paste works well and will save you from having to type it all out. Those that know what this is will want it and those that don't will want to read up on it before doing it to see if you want it.

Thank's Ed! That looks like the solution to my biggest gripe about new Windows OS versions in general, i.e. "Where did they hide the damn controls THIS time?" Maybe I'll name my magic folder "Sane Mode".

I did this on the one computer that runs Windows 7. It works. It brings all of the available options to one location and presents them there in an organized manner. However, the list of options is rather long. The trick now becomes locating that one option that you want to exercise. I like anyhow.
Thanks Ed, for posting this. I will use it with W7 and will definitely invoke it if and when I get Windows 8 or later.

Yes I had tried that and downloaded the new driver. Actually the upgrade to windows 10 got the latest driver. Problem is windows 10 will not load touchpad options so I can get in to change the options in effect. I have to have "tapping" off as my touch is too heavy and with tapping on I select things or go places I don't want.
Frankly this might be a Lenovo problem. They made many machines with the same model number but with entirely different touch pads. Example my daughter bought the same model 2 days after I bought mine from the same retailer. On her touch pad she has the option of 2 finger scroll, I do not have that option.
I like what I saw in windows 10 and I think Edge will prove to be the browser to beat, it is fast.
