I know what SS says but I have always believed it was a safety/liability issue. By always turning it to slow you won't over speed an SPT and cause damage or injury. My shorty is used primarily as a sanding station. It has the disk on almost all the time. I leave it set on "G" which is the middle of the disk sanding range. "G" is also in the speed range of the belt sander and strip sander that are used on the same machine so no problem. And no it does not blow the circuit breaker at that speed.

LOL, we'll yes I did turn it up and down every cut... I thought it was too keep it running well. If it's a safety issue, I could just buy a peddle for scroll sawing. My SS is on its own dedicated 30a breaker, so that's no issue.

My hands are sore from speed adjustments, wish I had known this earlier.

It is not a safety issue as I said above but, a peddle is definitely the way to go. We have a free standing Teal scroll saw here with a peddle. My wife loves it. Before the free standing saw she used a MK V mount 18" jig saw and we had a peddle on the MK V for that. It works just fine.

I have never turned the machine up and down with each cycle. I know they said that but when I first got my machine it came with a 3 day class for free and the instructor(now someone famous) did not do it so I figured there was no reason for me to do it. That was back in 1976, of course a couple of years ago I went to the powerpro so I don't much even think about that any more. Anyway for all those years of use that way I never had a problem.

It is good to turn it down when changing functions or at the end of the day. I've had to undo a set up a time or two because it was set/left at too high a speed for that operation...... but you learn to check before you start things up.

Are you having to do any sanding? I'm assuming the scroll blades have the reversed bottom teeth but the other blades are just blades but with the twist to them, is that correct? I've not used that type of blade so I'll have to pick some up to try.

Good to know its not essential. I will just set the speed and then in and off for now.

As for sanding, I will do it all at the end. Most will be good, I'll focus on the edges only, it would take to long and for virtually no benefit. I'll just sand off the bit of rough spots.

As for spiral blades, unless you need them for size of board, don't bother with them, they are like using a butcher knife to do surgery, crap results but handy to have if that's all you can use. They break easy, leave a rougher cut, don't clamp in as well and can't make sharp corners. Not to mention they really, really drift. I hated using them for this project, but that's all I could use for my application.

After taking a break from scrolling, I finished up my cuts today. Here is the dry fit. I did end up buying a peddle for the shelves though. Was an interesting project so far. Some sanding, linseed oil and lacquer left to go. Oh and assembly.

It's not shaping up to bad for an amateur.

It's not about following the lines perfectly, its all about how well you can fix the errors.

You are right about following the lines perfectly. No one will know once the pattern with the lines on it is removed.

Any chance I could get a copy of the pattern. My wife is interested in making it.

Just check the size of the tabs and slots to match your stock thickness. I custom sized mine and modified them to match.
