Ok, so I had time to work on the Mark VII again today. I wired up the switch, and it does have trouble with reverse. Sometimes it works, other times it hums. That must be why they disabled the reverse on the switch. It tested fine on the ohmmeter, but the motor has other thoughts about that.
My other switch seems to work fine. Unfortunately the lettering isn't very clear on the working switch. Next step will be looking into repairing the wonky switch.

The 'lettered' buttons are removable.

Good to know! Thanks! That makes things easier.
Would you recommend using the working switch (and switch the buttons), or just install an aftermarket toggle switch setup?

I would certainly use the working switch and replace the buttons to keep it original.

IIWM, I would then attempt repair of the intermittent switch. VERY careful re tensioning the leaf contacts MAY bring it back to full reliable function. A crap shoot if the contacts have been overheated.
Oh and it can quickly become a chinese puzzle.(pay attention!)

I just tried fixing one of my kids' toys that has a million gears, so I totally understand the Chinese puzzle concept!
I'll take your advice and try to repair the broken switch.

Maybe the contacts are just a bit dirty and spray contact cleaner will work. If not disassembly,contact burnishing and re-tensioning will be required. In any case, if it doesn't work now you can't hurt it by trying to fix it.

When you get in there you will realize that that mentioned above is essentially impossible with this design. I am sure you will recognize how to correct insufficient wipe etc..
BTW
minimal forming is recommended.
