The bearings are slightly different from one another. One has a standard bore and the other is a metric bore. If you got them from Jacob you most likely have the correct ones.

That's good to know. The two bearings I received from Jacob are different sizes.

I am hoping to have a local motor repair shop do the work, assuming they are in currently in operation. While intriguing, this is a bit out of my league. But I'll take it on if I have no choice.

Well the verdict is out .... it's the motor bearings. After I pulled the motor a second time it has a consistent squeak. I checked all the other bearings and belts as well and they were all in good shape. Here's a video with the squeaky motor in case you are curious. Thanks for all the help!

In anticipating putting everything back together I would like to use a new snap ring (aka retaining ring) for the motor sheave. Shopsmith & Anderson are out of stock besides which $4.95 per ring seems ridiculous when big box stores sell Hillman snap rings for a fraction of that. I am wondering if anyone has had luck using an off-the-shelf ring. Any experience with this out there?

The bowed rings that the big box stores show on their websites don't match 100% visually - the little nubs are wider on the SS ring. Not sure if this matters or not. As for size I would need to go to the store to visually compare. Online suppliers such as McMaster/Carr have many more to choose from but none seem to be an exact match.

Lowes did have the 8" Channel Lock snap ring pliers - I am now one tool richer.

I have one motor handy, the snap ring on it is what is called the "inverted" type, called SHI in the codes. The size for 5/8 shaft is 62, thus SHI-62. Easy to find and inexpensive, unless you want a quantity of one. Mine looks the same as the picture of one on the Anderson site. I think you are asking if the standard type SH would work, I think it would but I've never tried it. This description for SHI from Rotorclip:
"Functions like an SH ring on a shaft, only the lugs are “reversed.” This version
reduces the distance the lugs of the standard SH extend beyond the
circumference of the shaft. The shaft can then be used in an
application where clearance is minimal."

Based on that description, if it was me, I would use the SH type without hesitation if I could not find the SHI type. There is no clearance issue on the flat washer style motor.

David: Yes the one from my motor is SHI-62 as shown on the rotoclip website - thanks for the reference. I'll look around for that type.

Lo and behold Shopsmith sent the replacement snap ring even though their website and parts dept suggested they were out of sock. And the local motor shop replaced the bearings in a day, so I was able to reassemble the motor w/housing and sheaves. It runs so quietly compared to the racket I heard before! For reference, for those who may have been following this saga, here is what she sounds like now. (It sounds a lot louder in the video than in person b/c of proximity of microphone to the motor.)

I took the motor to a local motor shop and they replaced the bearings and it's working beautifully.
