Thank you ALL for your assistance. I've gotten this figured out now thanks to the inputs from others.
I believe this will be helpful while trying to communicate in postings on the forum.
In response to a question asked - I do not believe this method consumes anymore bandwidth than when done the other way. If anyone knows that assumption to be incorrect - please speak up.
Pulley/Belt covers were removed for maintenance only. No lectures please.

Hi Dusty,
With firefox set to about 1320 wide both images appear side by side. So if we work backwards and say the borders need 120 pixels then reduce both images by 60 making them 540 each, thus 540+540+120 = 1200.
So let's see what happens now.

I generally use the monitor's native resolution to minimize display artifacts. most of the time that makes the default font and icon sizes too small for me.Ed in Tampa wrote:I use 800x600 because anything else produces fonts that are too small for me to read comfortably. I tried the next higher setting and on some sites the printing was simply too small to read unless I leaned near my monitor.
I change the windows font size by going into
screen Properties/Settings/Advanced/DPI setting
and use the pull down menu to set it to large.
this works fine most places. occasionally I'll find myself on a website where the designer has placed text in a fixed-size window and the large font wraps the text out of the box. then I can use "ctrl and -" (sorry, ctrl-- looks incomprehensible) to reduce the font size in the browser.
ctrl-+ then increases the font size when I get off that site.
I know that I have also adjusted icon size in the past, but I can't seem to find that at the moment.
in case it helps,
Ivan

if you are doing the research to help do side by side comparisons, then this is a great thing.mickyd wrote:Taking this poll to determine the maximum width to make posted photos that are placed side by side. Even though we are limited to a max photo width of 800 pixels, they can be placed side by side giving it the appearance of being wider.
if you are looking to cheat around the 800x600 limit set by our hosts, then please consider that
1) the bandwidth costs them money and
2) fragmenting pictures so that we can thumb our noses at the forum rules would be a bad thing.
of course, just IMHO,

poll response:
I'm reading this, at the moment, on a laptop with 1280x800
my primary desktop is a pair of 24" LCDs set up side by side at 1920x1200 each.
(I am supposed to review a 54 column x ~6000 row spreadsheet once a month. this monitor setup has really helped save my eyesight.)
I just picked up a new 26" Vizio LCD that I will be using with a laptop docking station at 1920x1200. it looks like that one might be large enough for me to use normal sized font but it will probably still be set for large so that I can read the built-in screen. that laptop is a tablet that is supposed to be installed Tuesday. (FWIW, some of the Sam's Clubs have this Vizio monitor for $350. one down side note: it's a glass screen with no anti-reflection coating so there can be a mirror effect. it does have one of the nicest Vesa mounts that I have seen in a long time.)

Not in the least interested in cheating the forum. My interest was in the side by side comparison. This forums too important.iclark wrote:if you are doing the research to help do side by side comparisons, then this is a great thing.
