Sorry Red this was before my time, but having seen a few of these accidents in my time, I'd say that either they tried to lift a too-heavy load, or one of the outriggers failed.
My money would be on the first option. I'd guess it was either stupidity or they were reckless.

About 30 years ago I was involved with a mission to transport French Foreign Legion troops to Lumbumbashi, Zaire. They then used their own aircraft to get to Kolwezi to battle with "rebels".
We were on the ground in Lumbumbashi for 4 days. Unfortunately I did not get to get out & about. I do remember staying at a very nice hotel not too far from the airport. We never even did a trip into the city, it was 4 days of long hours on the ramp at the airport.

Perhaps ignorance of understanding the equipment is the 'reason'. Methinks the boom got too low(near horizontal) with too large a 'load' too far 'out'(the load was beyond the end of the boom, thus pulling the rig 'forward'). Once the front outriggers failed, it was 'accelerated doom'. JMHC
