Totally making a somewhat educated guess here. We should really ask on the 10ER Yahoo group to get a definitive answer. But, I think there are no physical/mechanical differences in the speed changer. The only differences are the markings on the indicator gauge. Which would mean that speeds 0 through 5 are the same on both of them. Which brings up a whole bunch of unanswered questions...

Can the speed changer be moved beyond 5?

If yes, then why does one version of the indicator stop at 5?

If no, then why does one version of the indicator go beyond 5?

Is 5 really the top speed, or is 8 the top speed?

The stated upper speed range of the speed changer is 6800 rpm. On the speed chart I provided previously, the highest recommended speed for any operation is 6100. Is that really 5? Is the difference between 6100 and 6800 the difference between 5 and 8?

Unfortunately, I'm all out of answers at this point.

My VERY LIMITED experience has been with the '5' version which over a 0 to 5 range causes the belts to traverse over what I believe to be a maximum range. But then my 'setup' procedure assumed that! It caused the belts to swap from almost bottoming out to riding at the od.

Older 10E/ER speed changer (0-8)

I was reviewing this thread and realized the unanswered questions were left begging.

I now know at least one of the answers(acquired from Rob(sdsmith).

The original speed reducer had a range on the indicator plate of 0 to 8 and the extended range was due to the belt being allowed to drop almost all the way to the shaft. This design had 'issues' relating to that 'detail' and was modified.

The range was reduced by adding the step to the sheave thus limiting the belt travel towards the shaft. This reduced the motion of the indicator plate.

I believe the 0 - 5 marks are the same as the original 0 - 5 marks on the earlier 0-8 version.(eyeballing the pix above)

I assume(but have not seen an earlier speed chart) that the speeds achieved are the same for 0 - 5 on both versions. That would imply the original had a greater speed range. More belt range = more speed change.
