Getting back to the heat "problem/observation":

Several years ago, when my planer was mounted on my MKV, I was involved in a lengthy session planing some hard maple. The headstock above the high speed PTO got too hot to touch.

There was no damage, this headstock continued on for ten more years before being converted to Power Pro.
