Bud, first of all, NICE project. Someday I hope to have the skills to do things like this.
Man, I envy you people that can get maple to work with. I've gotten to use a few scraps and love it. You can't get it around here. All I can find locally is red oak and walnut and cherry. I wish I had a stock of maple to use with the others for the great contast it provides. "sigh....."

Got some more stuff done. In a crunch to finish it all.
Several people liked the coasters. The first pic in the previous post was before applying poly to them. Here's the finished version:
A little wooden flute for my daughter who's into her music and band and all that:
And a cedar free-style bandsawn jewelry/whatnot box for her sister:
One son-in-law gets a conversation piece for his desk at work:
And I made another baby rattle for a friend's daughter who is 6-months old:

The grain pattern is quite unusual in those raintree sections. I assume it is all natural. At first I thought water 'marked'.

Some pens and a cutting board.
The pink pen is actually turned polymer clay, which is something I've been curious to try.

Nope, this stuff is "untouched." I'm not clever enough to try to enhance what nature has already done. Not the most fun stuff to turn, but the results can be pretty sweet. But then again, I like turning mesquite....
Here's a shot of some of the blanks where I cut up a log and dipped the ends in wax to slow down the drying (i.e. checking, cracking, splitting, etc., which occurs very rapidly).
