Using a Shop Smith Mark V on a Chris Craft Roamer refit

I took a break from the V-berth to get some parts painted that had been waiting for the painter for almost a year. I also made a hillbilly roof-top vent fan to try and cool off the inside of the tent. It's looks goofy but works great!

I got more V-berth cabinet panels cut, fitted, sealed, and insulated. There are a few more I need to finish before I'll be ready to do the final assembly. It's going slower than I'd like, but I suppose progress is progress.

Well, things were going along pretty good (albeit slower than I'd hoped) when I discovered a problem left behind by ol' Mr. Good-but-slow, the not very competent woodworker I hired for a while back in 2012. I ended up spending a weekend fixing yet another of his screw-ups, and in the process figured out the path forward to finishing the V-berth cabinetry...which involves having to finish a storage cabinet in the galley that I last touched 16 months ago!

It's all progress, so it's all good, but I do wish things went smoother and faster.

While I'm not a boat-owner, I think that same guy did some work around my house. Hang in there!

HA! Everybody seems to have had experience with this guy! lol

We took advantage of a weather window, taped up the whole boat, and painted what should have been the last coats of Imron MS1 clear on the mahogany toe rail. With 8 coats total, I shouldn't have to do any maintenance coats for at least 5 years. But, unfortunately, my painter and his crew screwed up on a couple of things, so they have to sand and spray once more.

It's always something. I think once I've used up all of the clear coat that has to be spray applied, I'm just going to use products that can be rolled and tipped and do it myself.

Do you ever worry this project is like the (apocryphal) story of painting the Golden Gate Bridge (by the time you get to one end, the other end already needs repainting)?

Keep on going. You'll get there eventually!

That thought had crossed my mind more than once. It's why I decided to keep it tented until it's the right time. Once the tent comes off, Mother Nature's attack begins.

I got back into the V-berth and wrapped up the final installation on several mahogany panels. It's looking pretty good!

I got the last of the panels cut for the HVAC cabinet in the V-berth, then glued and screwed the cabinet top in place. That's good timing, since Flagship Marine called to say the air conditioners are just about ready to be shipped. The project isn't moving along as fast as I'd like, but it's getting there.

I got to work on the last cabinet in the V-berth. It's turning out pretty good, but along the way I realized I have to finish a storage cabinet in the galley and cut some of the veneer panels for the galley bulkhead before I can wrap up the V-berth. I suppose it's better to figure that out now than later, when I'd have to backtrack.
