1) Because they are cup point.:eek:

2) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

FWIW those are very similar to 'nylok' screws. Guess they are generic(nylon pellet) nowadays.:cool:

Just need to talk to a local bolt supplier and see if they will get a small quantity.

This would be a good solution but I was unable to find 5/16"-18x1/4" set screws with the nylon patch. Furthermore, that particular source appears to sell only in quantity lots. The smallest I found was 100 pieces per lot.

I found at McMaster-Carr that they do not have the 5/16"-18x1/4" with the patch either. I ordered some 3/8" long set screws with the patch just to experiment. Those should arrive tomorrow.

News at eleven.:)

A WHAT?

Fastenal maybe(BIG maybe).

One and only local hardware store will not do such an imprudent(to them) thing.

And all unnecessary IMHO.;) For a critical set and forget setscrew or an intentionally not tightened down setscrew(quill half dog) it makes sense. One frequently run in/out, nope.

5/16 is probably the closest you're going to get length wise.

So what is a reasonable thing to conclude?

Pears and strawberries are both fruits, but are not a substitute for each other. 5/16" is not a substitute for 1/4" when excess length is a potential problem.(even though this thread started with a question regarding 'extra' length)[or was that the 'other' one?]{Yep was the 'other' one!}
