I have not had a bread box planer apart, but from the outside looking in, they appear to not have any cast parts(metal stampings?). IIRC they have separate in/out feed tables that are hinged.
Not a superior design IMHO.
My jury is still out on the newer cutter head designs. I see a lot of production cracks for them to slip into when being made.

Have you had the chance to look at the DeWalt 735? The table alone is enough to give a surface without appreciable snipe. Also will expand to 6" and go down to 1/8". Can be used for much edge planing.

At extreme risk of providing aid and comfort to the opposition, I will admit that I once tried to lift a DW735 on the shelf at Lowes. Almost gave myself a hernia. And I'm no 90-lb weakling. If there are no castings in it, there must be a whole lot of sheet-lead.

It has been my experience that you get what you pay for. I have a Delta Planer which works for me. If you are thinking of making a purchase, you may want to consider posting a review in that portion of the forum. If you are looking at reviews, I would look at third party reviews which may exist for planers. My Delta has done well for me, however I have a SS Planer which I hope to put into use after I replace some worn rollers.
