I don't know what I am going to do with regard to either Windows 8 or 10. What I do know is that should I decide to 'attempt and upgrade', I will do so only after I have rebuilt an XP system that does everything I currently need it to do and I have a copy of all of the existing data files.

As I have said already, XP has been an excellent OS for me and I hesitate to give it up. Microsoft, however, is making it very difficult to continue as an XP user. In addition to MS, some of the other software manufacturers are contributing to XPs demise by limited their support.

It seems clear to me that Microsoft wants XP out of the way. Happy XP users are not going to invest in any other OS until events force the issue.

Dusty Microsoft has clearly stated it wants XP gone. The want all XP users to go to Windows 10. Unfortunately for most users that means a new machines or at least replacing nearly everything in the machine they have.

Also many peripheral manufactures are not supplying drivers for their older products for windows 10. That means besides upgrading the computer you must also buy new printers, scanners, and other driver reliant devices.

I share your frustration with Microsoft and I agree that as a business they would like for everyone to implement a sweeping change to new software and hardware (though Microsoft does not sell hardware).

But you slightly over state your position. Implementing Windows 10 does not force (or even pressure) everyone to buy a new machine (unless your machine dates back a decade or so. I have two machines running on XP. One will host Windows 10 with very few problems. The other is simply too slow. A new processor would fix that but a new processor costs about as much as a basic Windows 10 laptop.

Yes, the peripheral manufactures make it hard to find updated drivers but there are companies online today whose sole business objective is to offer those drivers (old and new). Now my all-in-one printer may not make the grade but it is almost as old as I am. This was the one and only printer I have purchased since dot-matrix went out of style.

Dust I did download the Windows 8 - upgrade assistant. It,s advice buy a new machine!

Most machine running XP are machines built with XP installed. Most don't have a fast enough prosessor, storage, graphics.

Yes they can updated but my friendly computer expert told me it would be cheaper to buy a new machine. In my case he said he could save my 120 gig harddrive, everything else had to replaced, including motherboard, storage processor,graphic card and my DVD drive because it showed signs that death was near it. He said the case could be used but the power supply should be replaced because it was border line too small and older than he was.

My problem is I have used a machine with SSD harddrive and I WANT one! Boy do they hum.
Initial boot up is like a third of the time, library searches are almost done before you start them and it shuts down in an instant.
Almost like an iPad instant on instant off and everything in between is done in a wink.

I guess I just got lucky. My aging machine is comprised of hardware that is compatible. It is software that I will have to purchase.

Today Microsoft reported that 75 million users have installed windows 10. I find that number amazing since most manufactures were slow in upgrading most new machines. At Best Buy only Dell and Toshiba have windows 10 per- installed. In the last few days some HP and Lenovo are coming with 10. In any case that is their report 75 million in less than a month

I moved Windows 7 (the entire HD and its' contents) off of my defunct gaming computer onto a new computer. I now have it working like a new machine. I shall stick with Windows 7 until Microsoft makes another move to force to some other OS.

The offer to upgrade my computer to Windows 10 has ceased to exist. It used to be there on the tool bar constantly and in a pop up occasionally. Somehow they got the hint.

I have no idea what the installed base is but considering Windows is used every where in the entire world is that number really amazing?

If 75 million users, world wide, had purchased Windows 10 in that short period of time - now that might be amazing. But it was free. That is just human nature.

I wonder what percentage of the installations are functional. I count for one that installed twice and then reverted back to Windows 7.

I agree Dusty and like you I installed and then back off. I don't know if I will go to Windows 10 ever after that experience. Apple keeps making more and more sense to me. In fact I'm finding the IPad is really all I need. My wife now has to fight me for her iPad.
