Terry, that lone washer, with a square hole in the middle,
should be between the 2 nuts. Tighten the 2 nuts on the washer,
and it is quite stable.

Not an SS idea, I remember seeing the same thing on other
drill-presses.

Thanks re. the washer placement.

Also thanks to someone for the idea of extending the quill, stuffing the pulley shaft with grease and then blocking the grease when the retracted quill tries to push it out. I had mistakenly been blaming all vibrational noise on old bearings but there is no side to side free play in my bearings and the E is now purring along smooth and quiet.

I then removed the excess grease in the shaft as it slows down the quill return . . . especially cause I haven't gotten around to adding another half a spring turn.

Terry, you NEED that grease in there.

Try a lighter weight grease, like White Lithium
grease.

Oh, the old method of getting that grease in there,
advance the quill, put in some grease, and use a "finger"
to block the hole in the drive shaft, while you retract
the quill.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong. "Quill." The whole thing
that moves back and forth. "Spindle." The thing that
rotates inside the quill.

O.K. I used some Amsoil bearing grease that I had.

I've got a tube of lithium grease I just noticed the other day -- my dad's favorite.
Maybe I'll try some engine bearing assembly grease . . . I've rebuilt several engines to perfection, by the way, just so's ya know I'm not a babe in the woods. takes people a while to know each other's capabilities on forums. Another forum that I find extremely helpful is Yesterday's tractors. I have a '53 Ford Jubilee.

No wonder the spline of the spindle wanted to chatter . . . it was bone dry.
I DID grease it carefully in all it's grooves the first time I assembled it but then later I tried that stuffing suggestion.

Probably what I first did, brushing grease into all the grooves, was adequate.

Well it's time to hit the hay. I'm going on a little holiday down to Bellingham tomorrow morning and picking up some musical equipment and tractor parts in the process. I take the ferry from Sidney, B.C. to Anacortes, then go into Bellingham.

Thanks for the video.

I'm trying to figure out where the snap ring goes. Mine had no snap ring period, when I had it apart.
I can't recall seeing a groove on the shaft (probably because I saw no snap ring) but I presume that if there is one, it would be keeping the spring against the inside back face of the spring housing. (?)

Or perhaps the snap ring governs how far the pinion shaft travels into the headstock. (?)

Hi Terry,

Your welcome! As for the snap ring, Yours won't have it. The snap ring is used on the 10ER to hold the depth gauge scale collar.

If you haven't already done so, Make sure you apply a thin film of light weight "non-gumming" oil to the outside of the quill. If you take the quill back out, Be sure to include the last 3-1/4" of the quill which remains inside the headstock when the quill is fully extended.

A lot of folks forget about that area since you don't normally see it.
