Unfortunately it looks like all of these connections and continuity checks are correct according to the information and diagram above.

Now, does anyone know how to check the windings?

How do you feel about measuring voltage(120VAC) with it turned on?

You need a far better meter to 'check' the windings and even then absolute results are not possible.

Ive done far worse with my electricity turned on I suppose.

Have you plugged the motor in to another AC circuit on another breaker? It is rare but breakers can go bad and some years back there was particular one that had a problem. It's easy to do and would prove that it is something to do with the motor rather then the wiring.

I've also had outlets fail. My wife had a place she use to iron and while the iron was only 1000/1200 watts the outlet started to fail. So even if it is not the breaker it could just be the outlet.

Yes they certainly can go bad. When I wired the compressor in my dedicated shop it tripped the breaker. It had been running for years in the garage. It is a dedicated 220V circuit and I got the breaker from a friend at work. After scratching my head for a while I happened to be looking at the power panel when I turned the compressor on. The cover was removed and I saw a spark and the breaker tripped. I replaced the breaker and all was well.

Thank you all for your help. I eventually took the motor to a local Generator shop. The prognosis is not good. The windings on one side were bad.

So I will see what they will charge me to rebuild another like motor to fit in the casing and mount.

If this is a bad way to go, please let me know. (Cant afford a new replacement for sure.) I do not know their price yet. Their plan (I think) is to get a similar GE motor and see if they can retrofit the windings etc from the other housing to this AO Smith motor.

I would be very leery of that plan. Not to say they would not be successful, but swapping manufacturers is I would think not easy.

Other options are the used market in the form of a motor, or headstock or even another whole machine. I've gotten several used machines all with good working motors in the $200 range. Of course you take a chance going the used route.

Guys, I cant thank you enough.

I dont want to scrap this wonderful piece of machinery. Frankly, I dont even need it, and it was not in my plans to use one or own one. However, I have always admired engineering marvels of which I think this is. So I will continue to see how I can get this done.

I will definitely look on the used market for one (Guessing Ebay is the best source).

Again, I thank you all for your help, it really is very much appreciated and I want to make sure I acknowledge that.
