Where did you get your shopsmith?

My fathers 500 with jointer was puchased at a mall demo around 1980. I purchesd my 510 with multiple SPT's in 1990 while working at shopsmith in Kansas city.

Frankly I have always poo-poo'd Shopsmiths, but a friend who was a solid woodworker extolled their capabilities as a horizontal borer. So when I saw one (Mark V 500) on Craigslist for $150, I decided to look at it. It was stored in a FL carport, and all the accessories were in a side room where the roof had caved in. What the hell, I bought the nasty rusted things for $125. After a bit (lol) of restoration, I bought another (510) which "needed headstock rebuild" but was in great shape otherwise for $150. The first is now a shorty servicing the bandsaw (with mods) and the jigsaw. The second is my favorite drill press (two bearing quill) and holds the belt sander. All it really needed was some TLC (sheave lube).

The added bearings/view window/tensioning hole are excellent mods for the bandsaw.
If you have belt sander issues, don't be afraid to take down the idler wheel - ignore what Nick says in the video. Not that hard to disassemble and put back together if you have a phone camera.

I have a tablesaw, so I'll never use the SS for that - but I do love all the capabilities that I gained not to mention the full set of sanding drums/sleeves/drill bits/lathe tools I have garnered.

I want to get a 3rd SS just to mount on a wall as a dedicated drill press, lol.
