I did exactly that, it's inexpensive and I know it's solid. I am not a pro by any sense, but I figured the odds of it going back together perfectly and lining up correct seemed pretty slim

I am on business travel and will get back to try and repair this weekend.

I think the lesson learned in Take your machine apart periodically and clean everything. Especially those of us that have to store it in the Garage in uncontrolled environment.

Every once and a while, there's been a discussion about filling the tubes with stuff (everything from lead to cement) to make the Shopsmith heavier and less susceptible to vibration as a lathe. Maybe that's what this is? Or is it only in the ends of the tubes?

This was a "natural Occurrence" of some sort. Neither my Dad or I added anything to the tubes. My gut reaction is that is is corrosion offal of some sort but the shear volume is incredible to me. It was on in one tube, the one that corroded. There was some sawdust on the other and no corrosion in that one.

I sent a note to SS to see if they have seen this before.

You will probably never know but it seems to me that something got spilled on that tube at some time. No reason for one to corrode like that and not the other one.

Spilled: I suppose but as noted. I suppose we'l never know. It looks like the new parts are $130.00. I want to verify I am ordering the right parts on Monday with SS. I have a friend with an arbor press and were gonna mess with it and see if we can pop the parts apart.
