Yes that is a concern. Its a Brazilian cherry wood laminate(?) i.e. it has a thin finished layer of cherry. I was planning to put some blue painters tape over it to protect the finish from the fence. I wasn't sure about chip out but assumed I'd need a high toothcount sharp blade to do this cut.

I've talked with the contractor who is installing the floor about other options and we have agreed that cutting the reducer would be the best if it can be done. I contacted 2 professional carpenters on Angie's list, but they said the job was too small to bother with.

The latest suggestions from the forum are all helpful. Right now I'm planning to make a simple jig to hold the piece safely against the fence while I wait for the correct arbor adapter to come from Shopsmith.
