Here it shows the U-drive screw protruding far enough where you can grab it with a pair of vise grips. This completes the nameplate removal.

MickyD, thanks for posting these detailed reports. Having gone through this process a couple times myself - and figuring out HOW to restore a machine as I went along - I really appreciate the detailed posts showing the challenges you're facing and how you're handling them. I'm learning new tricks that I can apply to the next one I restore! So, thanks!

The singing brother and sister" The Carpenters" had a song about" Weve only just Begun" Maybe this is what he ment? Of coarse I have been wrong before.
I keep finding little windows on this forum, that I don't really know what they do. So sometimes I experiment. Probably shouldn't do that, I know in my shop it can get me into trouble.

Perhaps! Makes sense!
I thought that, but discounted it as too far fetched; but then it WAS from Mike!:D

If you've been following the thread, you know that I decided to try and recreate the ER's nameplate from scratch using a chemical etching process. I made my first attempt last night. I'll post all the details as I fine tune the process but wanted to show you what it looks like. The prototype I made was not like Norm's Yankee Workshop prototypes. I consider it to fall into the "successful failure" category. Even though it doesn't look very good, I am at least on the right track. I know what I did right and also what I did wrong.

Here my original and the one I etch prior to paint:

You can see that there are a lot of surface "issues" going on but I am still happy in the way it came out for the first attempt. It was like magic watching the process.

It took about 20 minutes in a 135* heated bath of ferric chloride to get to this depth, which is about .004" just like the original. I expected to see some action going in the bath as it etched but there was absolutely none. I was checking it about every 5 minutes with an eye loop to see what was going on.

Anyway, there you are. I'll be fine tuning tonight.

p.s. Hey Blane (aka BPR), still think I should have just used the old one on my resto?

Mike, great job for a first attempt. What is the material you're using to make the new nameplate out of?
ShopSmith MarkV-520 with Belt Sander, Jointer, Band Saw, Strip Sander, Scroll Saw and Biscuit Jointer SPTs and a DC-3300...
Woodworking Hobbyist (Check out all my Woodworking Plans (http://vbwhiz.isa-geek.net/plans)
Aspiring Sandcarver: Breaking glass one grain at a time.
Black Powder Shooter (love the smell of burning sulfur).
