I tried using a drill press and the bit just slipped and started chewing into the aluminum. I'll have to figure something else out. In the meantime I'm bidding on a new base on ebay. Fingers crossed.
A new base is probably a good way to go - once those pins get messed up, it's tough to deal with it...as you noted, drilling it out when it's surrounded by aluminum is easier said than done. Seems like the bases can be had on E-Bay for $20 pretty regularly in good condition, so this will probably save you a lot of agravation.

Exactly. It's just not worth the headache. I'm going to order a punch set so I'll be prepared when the new base gets here.

Wow, I have two sets of bases I would cheerfully give away. The were under my Mark V's which have been upgraded to Mark 7's. Tis a shame you aren't closer. Jim

Another caveat!
The greenie(and early goldies) have a slightly different base than the older versions. They were designed for the larger 1 7/8" bench tubes. The opening is NOT the difference. The difference is the side stop(s). The later stops protrude further from the side than the older ones.

Ah shoot. I was bidding on a grey one. I'll have to keep looking.

I haven't seen those for sale but made my own - see pic.
It's just a 36" dowel with a small block glued to the end. I drilled a hole in the block, epoxied a rare earth magnet in the hole and put a felt cover on it. Works great.

I'm still searching for a base. I have plenty to do before I find one anyway. Here's a question for you guys. What are the thoughts on changing the color of a machine? Its not that I don't like the gold and copper, I'm just thinking of having everything powder coated.

Tis thine decision, and thine alone!
PC gotta be more 'durable'.

Or be wiling to scrape it all out. I thought about Powder Coating mine until I saw the price tag on that.
