Realize Nick is addressing 'the masses'.

Many here are far more adventuresome and would 'fix' it.

When the Quill return spring is the subject, 'adventuresome' is a gross understatement however one can persevere.

When removing the speed control, be careful to not miss/drop/lose the very small spring behind the outer dial. Note how it goes in the equally small slots/grooves.

Since you seem to be about to get into the complete innards, it is a good idea to remove the motor pan and motor so as to greatly reduce the weight. Worst part is reinstalling the power switch. There is a way to prevent that for the future.

I realize 'we' are getting 'into' this far more than you likely anticipated, but you are gaining an understanding of what this beast is and will allow quick unaided response by thee to any future 'issue'.
